sticker van WoerdenThis website gives information on pottery made by Marius and Hugo van Woerden in the period 1964 - 1984 in Gouda. Their pottery is also known as Vest.

From 1964 to 1973 the brothers van Woerden made pottery with the name "van Woerden Gouda Aardewerk".

In 1973 the name was changed in "Vest keramiek Gouda-Holland".

The Vest company stopped in 1984 and the brothers emigrated to Canada, where they started another company Castle Ceramics .
Hugo is still active in Pottery Nieuwkoop, part of the family company Pottery Direct, with branches in the Netherlands and Canada.

More information about Marius and Hugo van Woerden is available at the Marius van Woerden website (vestkeramiek.com) and on other websites. See sources.
On this website the name Vest is used, also for pottery from the period "van Woerden". Vest ceramics was made to use with flowers. So oil lamps with lid, were used for dried flowers arrangements. Most models are therefore called vase on this website. Exceptions are electric lamps, ashtrays and flower pots.

Forms - Models

Vest Ceramics is characterized by its many forms and models. From very large to very small. The shapes sometimes seem quite simple, but are very stylish. However, there is never a figur or motif or decor. Yet there was a large variation by using more then 20 different glazes.

Glazes

Vest is especially known for the Fat Lava glaze. When baking this glaze, vesicles develop. The structure resembles lava stone. Well known glazes are Negro and Rubens.

Less well known are red and blue glazes that are smooth. The result of these glazes was unpredictable and only visible after baking. This caused a big variation.
